Laboratories

Earth Sciences has 5 specialised laboratories with modern facilities:

These facilities are supported by four full-time staff. In addition to core research in geosciences, the laboratories provide analytical capabilities to support mineral and hydrocarbon exploration, environmental chemistry, toxicology and  medical and forensic research.

We also have two undergraduate teaching/computer laboratories and two postgraduate student computer laboratories.

Earth Systems Science Computational Centre (ESSCC)

  • ESSCC specialises in the development and application of numerical simulations for Earth Sciences. The centre’s expertise includes:
    • large scale finite element simulations
    • discrete element simulations with very large numbers of particles
    • 3D visualization
  • ESSCC hosts high performance computing facilities including:
    • SGI Altix ICE 8200 Cluster with 512 cores and 2 TBytes main memory
    • Nexis 9000 NAS Storage Server with 14.4 TBytes disc space
    • 3D stereographic visualization facility
    • ESSCC is a core participant of the AuScope/NRCIS network

Library

The Dorothy Hill Physical Sciences and Engineering Library incorporates one of the best Earth Science libraries in the southern hemisphere with particular strengths in geology of all parts of the world, paleontology, economic geology, geochemistry, regional geology, and seismology.
